Outfield: The outfield had no problems with Fuld absolutely putting on a clinic line the Legend often does. (4 stars)

Infield: Is it too early to give Longo the AL Gold Glove for 3B? Just a magnificent day for him. Loney and Duncan were great as well defensively. (5 stars)

Starting pitching: David had a rough day, only one clean inning (the 5th) and throwing 60 pitches before the end of the 3rd. It was probably opening day jitters, but it's got to improve from here. The Rays backbone is pitching. (2.7 stars)

Bullpen: McGee started strong but ended up gift wrapping the game to the O's. The rest of the pen did really well. McGee needs to get it together. (3 stars)

Catching: Poor Jose. He's getting beat up again behind the plate and it's only the first day of the season. His veteran catching abilities shined through getting the Rays some strike outs that they shouldn't have gotten. (5 stars)

Offense: Another year another need for the Rays to be scrappy, the 5th inning embodied this. Unfortunately that was the only inning the offense shined. Yeah there were bright spots but the only real highlight reel worthy inning for the offense was the 5th. (3 stars)

Umpiring: The umpiring was really well today, and little bit of a large strike zone from the home plate umpire, but by and large it was fine. (3 stars)

Player(s) of the game: Ben Zobrist for his offense and Longo for his defense. Simply put: wow.

Play of the game: In the fifth inning Longo made a diving stop and did a barrel roll and still managed to get the ball to first for the out. Just give him the gold glove, no need to wait to November. (Watch it here.)

Final word: The Rays are off and running. Even though today's loss is not what we wanted, we saw what the Rays need to do this year, but need more of it. And that is manufacture runs. The long ball is great but it's not gonna come along enough, gonna have to manufacture your runs to get wins. It will help starting tomorrow where the Opening Day jitters are gone. All said, solid day for the Rays, now time to build on the good and get wins. (3.5 stars)
