Joe takes shot at Red Sox, Red Sox Nation responds

by Aaron Giddens

One of the more interesting quotes of this past weekend was Joe Maddon's response to a question that would the Rays follow the Red Sox lead and ban beer in the clubhouse. In response, Joe replied:

"We're not the Boston Red Sox," ... "I've said it a hundred times, for me at the end of the day, I'd much prefer our players making good decisions, and if you're of legal age, and the game is over, and you've sweated and lost a bunch of pounds and you want to sit down and have a beer, I see nothing wrong with that."

Needless to say, that got the Boston fans riled up. Some, unsurprisingly, sinking pretty low in their comments.

"Usually when your team is the better team you don't act like a 10 year old and make stupid comments such as this one. Joe [Maddon] is a loser. ALSO, The only reason the Rays made the playoffs last year was because the [Yankees] cheated and lost on purpose, giving up 8 runs after the 8th inning."

"Whether you are driving from airport or from the clubhouse, DWI is DWI, Maddon you dummy.Show me a company that allows drinking on the job, its a company that's irresponsible.Or maybe you haven't see TV adds about MADD."

This is my personal favorite, not because it's right, but because of the sheer arrogance and ignorance it shows:

"Maddon and the Rays need beer goggles so it looks like there are 30,000 fans every night instead of 1,200...

We're talking about a team nicknamed for sunshine that plays in a dome."

Those are just three examples. Some are more entertaining. Personally, I loved the comment, I ended up retweeting it. I don't see what the big fuss is about, they're not the Red Sox, they are the Rays. And as long as the players act responsibly, I don't see the need to ban it either. Right on, Joe.
